Today is one of those normal days. It's one of those days where Rachel and I pry ourselves out of bed around 7:45, coffee is made, Lucie is stabbing her way across the carpet in gigantic heels, and something awesome is happening somewhere else in the world.
See, for the last two months, 33 miners have been trapped in a mine around 2,000 ft. below ground in Chile in a copper-gold mine. For seventeen days, they waited in a rescue room after a cave-in, wondering if they'd ever be remembered, found, or be able to see their families again. But after those agonizing weeks, rescue workers located them, and were able to send things down a tiny shaft to them, stuff like food, air mattresses all rolled up, cables for communication, and other items. After hundreds of hours of planning, and hundreds of people working day and night, they drilled another shaft down, and designed a rig, and at midnight last night, after 69 days, the first miner was pulled to the surface. Since then, 12 miners out of the 33 have been pulled up through a 28" tube. The operation will probably go on for another day and a half, but it is just wonderful to watch the news, and know that millions of others are tuning in, too, and we are all gathering around to hear good news, for once. I was listening to Lonely Nation by Switchfoot yesterday, and one lyric said,
"We're just not amused
And we're just used to bad news"and I woke up thinking that today. It's true.
But not today. Today, people are getting saved. And the whole world is watching.
¡Viva Chile!
